Meriem Khalfoun - 2024 Winning Essay

Meriem Khalfoun

My path has been shaped by my innate fascination with mathematics and science, leading me to explore the depths of physics. As a result, I obtained a bachelor's degree (2021) followed by a master's degree (2023) in theoretical physics. Although my research was academically rewarding, I felt a disconnect with my fundamental aim: to make a real difference to the world around me. This led me to redirect my focus to the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This decision is propelled by my conviction that AI can be a positive force for significant change in the world.

My first contact with AI was during my internship in medical physics (2019), the aim of which was to use AI to improve radiotherapy treatments for cancer. This experience made me discover the possibility of applying my knowledge of physics and mathematics to modern and human issues. In 2021, I took part in an intensive summer programme (AI4Good) that shares my vision of using AI for the common good.

An important aspect of my life is my social involvement in various committees. For example, since 2021 I have been a member of the organising committee for the Photonic Games, an annual event during which 300 students from disadvantaged secondary schools are invited to take part in educational competitions to get them interested in science.

I'm currently studying for a postgraduate diploma specialising in artificial intelligence, with the aim of merging my scientific skills with my passion for social impact to exploit my strengths in line with my values.
