Sébastien Maheux - 2021 Winning Essay

My passion for bridges started at a young age because I grew up near the second longest covered bridge in Canada. Therefore, it was natural for me to complete my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering at the Université de Sherbrooke. Since 2017, I have been a doctoral student in the same discipline at Western University, my first time studying in English. Throughout my university studies, I have been awarded 20 distinctions, including the prestigious NSERC CGS-D Scholarship. I am also the author of several publications in scientific journals and conference proceedings. To impact positively the engineering profession, I am also a Board Member of the Young Engineers Programme Board of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering.
My doctoral work focuses on the stability of cable-supported bridges under wind effects. By the development of new techniques, my research will lead to safer bridges worldwide. Last year, in order to develop advanced skills, I did research internships in Rome, Italy and London, UK with world-renowned engineers. I am planning to spend another four months in Italy in 2021.
Following my Ph.D., I wish to work as a bridge engineer on major bridge projects around the world and become a respected bridge engineer who promotes practices respectful of the environment. After a few years of engineering consultancy, I wish to become a professor with a practical teaching approach while continuing to be a consultant. This will allow me to apply my research ideas to solve real problems.
